Rufus Wainwright (vocals, piano, guitar)
Canada’s Rufus Wainwright is a unique figure in 21st century music. The elaborate and sometimes baroque fashioning of his creations has always placed him mid-way between the cult and the popular, between easy and more complicated listening, between the commercial and indie modes. This, added to the ability to combine accomplished performances with talent as a composer makes him a well-rounded and versatile artist with no qualms when it comes to assuming influences of folk, chamber pop, musicals from Broadway’s golden era, the American songbook, classical music and even opera.
The son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and brother of Martha Wainwright, also a singer, Rufus began playing the piano at the age of 6 years and touring with his family at 13. Surrounded by art and music from birth, a singer, pianist, guitarist and composer, his work reveals strong lyrical influences ranging from opera to French chanson, passing through the music hall and folk. His songs talk about love, falling out of love, drugs and alcohol, about the family… about life. Along the way he has come across influences, artists and legends including Judy Garland, Debbie Harry, Elton John, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, David Byrne and Sheryl Crow, Burt Bacharach, Miley Cyrus, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, the Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Williams, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Sting… All this and much more comes together naturally and organically in this genius who will give a solo performance taking a marvellous look back over his whole career at the 59th Jazzaldia. Diana Krall is one of the most popular figures in the Jazz of recent decades. Her exquisite piano playing, her suggestive voice, her intimate and romantic timbre, her elegance… have taken her to the highest peaks of popularity, making her one of the most easily recognisable voices of our time in the worlds of both Jazz and pop. Krall is influenced by other great singers at the piano, such as Carmen McRae, Fats Waller, Sarah Vaughan, Roberta Flack, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Shirley Horn, Aretha Franklin...
Diana Krall was born in Nanaimo, a small town in British Columbia, Canada. She started learning the piano at the age of 4, and was already playing in a local restaurant by the time she turned 15. With the help of her father, a pianist well-read in the keyboard players of the twenties and thirties such as Fats Waller, James P. Johnson and Earl Hines, she decided to take up music full-time. She received a grant to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and in 1993 released her first album, Stepping Out. Since then, she has masterfully proceeded to combine her new and own compositions while taking a fresh approach to the immortal standards and numbers of Jazz and pop music, always compiling her repertoire with exquisite finesse.
Krall, who performed at the Jazzaldia for the first time in 1997, is a Jazz icon, a star who has sold more than 15 million albums while delighting half the planet with her extraordinary talent, her subtle and elegant music, her silky and captivating voice and her mastery and impeccable technique on the piano.
